- you love doing art, craft, creating things AND you enjoy working in a team.

- maybe you’re aiming at a career in the Arts & Design field and /or community, recreation, education social services, care & support work, and want practical experience working with the community in the ARTS

- maybe you’re still exploring options for creative work & training, and you are just out of school so you need some confidence and practical experience !.

To be eligible* you only need to be:

- Age between 16 - 24 (on the programme start date)
- Preferably registered with Work & Income NZ (If you need help with this, we can explain !)

* There are NO FEES to pay for eligible applicants

INTAKE:

The creative Youth programme runs twice a year, for 20 weeks each time:
- from late January to late July ( interviews in December, January)
- from early August to mid December ( interviews in June, July)

Timetable:
8:30 - 3:00 Mon. - Thurs,
8:30 - 4:30 Mon - Friday during school holidays ( you will apprentice during those times)
A few weekend days may be included for exhibitions, field trips, camps, marae stays, and special events.

Duration:
Minimum 14 weeks, generally 20 - 40 weeks
Assessments will be made of your skills at entry, together with the goals you set.
Duration may also be determined by Government policy, which changes from time to time.
This programme is currently funded by the Ministry of Youth Development.

PROGRAMME CONTENT:

Art - Craft - Carving - Painting - Drawing - Graphics - 2-D design - 3-D design - Screenprinting - Presentations - Drama for fun - Working with kids - AND Older People - Community Projects - Cultural Development - Public Art projects.

1. ARTS & GENERAL EDUCATION: Workshops in a range of art & design studio skills, communications and study skills, introduction to drama & storytelling, working with children working with older people, special needs and community awareness.

2. CULTURAL AWARENESS: Practical workshops, te reo & tikanga Maori as well as learning about diverse cultural / ethnic groups in our community.

3. COMMUNITY PROJECTS: Each programme features hands-on work on something like - murals in public places,banners, signwriting, mosaics, carving, sculpture, displays etc. These projects change in every programme so ask us what’s coming up !

You will also be trained to run a Children’s Holiday Programme, and get excellent professional experience as a leader. We may also include working with older people on a special project, or maybe a group of other people with special needs or characteristics. Expect to GROW!

4. RECREATION: We include fun time for basic fitness & health, exercise and outings, social games and recreation leadership skills.

5. WORK EXPERIENCE: Artmakers is a working studio. All the community projects have REAL clients, and you will learn skills “on-the-job”, under the supervision of senior artists / project leaders. When an opportunity comes up, we may be able to help place you with an employer towards the end of the programme. Employers prefer people with REAL work experience !!


HOW TO APPLY...

2. Bring along samples / portfolio of your own art / craft work. This should be brought to the interview. If you haven’t got a portfolio, you may be asked to produce something before an interview can be completed. The interview may include a simple assessment through a quick drawing exercise.

3. The Interview will cover what you’re interested in and what you’ve been doing, and determine if you have a strong willingness to work in a team and in community situations, and it’s useful to have some EVIDENCE (samples) of your ability and interest in arts and craft.
